📰 Lufthansa CEO’s Wife Involved in Fatal Traffic Accident in Sardinia

Porto Cervo, Sardinia — On July 8, 2025, Vivian Spohr, wife of Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, was driving her BMW SUV when she struck a 24-year-old Italian woman, Gaia Costa, on a pedestrian crosswalk. Costa, who worked as a babysitter in the area, tragically died at the scene from severe head injuries.

Witnesses reported that Spohr initially appeared unaware of the collision and only stopped after bystanders alerted her—she then fainted from shock. Both alcohol and drug tests returned negative results.

Italian authorities have opened involuntary manslaughter investigations, reviewing surveillance footage and questioning witnesses to determine whether factors like distraction played a role. Although Spohr has since returned to Germany, her lawyers stress she is fully cooperating with legal proceedings. Her attorney stated she feels “dismay and deep regret” and is “at the complete disposal of the Italian judicial authorities”.

Gaia Costa was from Tempio Pausania and was in Porto Cervo for babysitting when the accident occurred. The local community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa since 2014, and his wife have issued condolences to Costa’s family. Lufthansa, however, declined to comment, stating the incident is a private matter . Vivian Spohr is also known for her philanthropic work as patron of the Lufthansa-employee-founded Help Alliance foundation.

🔍 What Happens Next

  • Italian prosecutors continue to investigate the incident as involuntary manslaughter.

  • Surveillance footage will be reviewed, and witness testimonies compiled.

  • No charges have yet been filed publicly, and Spohr remains fully cooperative.
