Catastrophic Flood at Camp Mystic: Dozens Missing from Texas Girls’ Camp

KERR COUNTY, Texas — July 5, 2025 – A sudden and devastating flash flood struck Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River near Hunt, Texas, during the early hours of July 4. Within less than an hour, the river surged nearly 26 feet, sweeping away cabins, roads, and creating a scene of utter devastation .

As of Saturday morning, at least 24 people are confirmed dead across Kerr and Kendall Counties. Among the dead, 23 to 25 girls staying at Camp Mystic remain unaccounted for. Officials emphasize that missing children may be stranded—possibly in trees or out of communication—but not necessarily lost.

🔎 Desperate Search & Rescue

  • 237 individuals have been rescued already, including younger campers evacuated by Texas Game Wardens via helicopter.

  • The flood overwhelmed cabins near the riverbank, propelling older campers to higher ground known as “Senior Hill,” where many were rescued safely.

  • Search efforts involve over a dozen helicopters, drones, boats, and hundreds of personnel—but access remains difficult due to washed-out roads and ongoing adverse weather.

📢 Community in Crisis

  • Families gathered at reunification centers in Ingram, clutching photos of missing daughters and awaiting news.

  • In nearby Beaumont, a prayer service was held for an 8-year-old camper, Mary Grace Baker, along with other missing young women from the area.

  • Social media is flooded with pleas for help. A survivor recalled waking at 1:30 AM to the roar of water, eventually fleeing cabins by rope and helicopter.

🏛️ Official Response

  • Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Gov. Greg Abbott have mobilized state resources and urged Texans to “pray on your knees” for the missing.

  • Authorities declared multiple states of emergency, warning of additional rain and urging residents to remain in safe areas theguardian.com.

⏳ What to Watch

  • Rescue teams continue searches in treacherous and flooded zones.

  • Updated numbers on survivors and missing persons are expected later today.

  • Authorities caution that pulse of the river remains unstable, and conditions could evolve quickly.

This tragedy has shocked the tight-knit Hill Country communities that have loved Camp Mystic for nearly a century. Families and responders are bracing for the outcomes, separated by hope and uncertainty.
